World Oceans Day Beach Cleanup and Outdoor learning classes

The Department of Environmental Affairs will join the global community to celebrate the annual World Oceans Day in Port Elizabeth on 8 June 2019.

In partnership with the Eastern Cape provincial Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs (DEDEA), the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM), the Nelson Mandela University, the Benguela Current Convention (BCC) and a number of local NGOs, the department will conduct a beach clean-up and an awareness campaign focusing on historically disadvantaged communities and schools around the Metro.

As part of the day’s activities, DEA will also host learners from schools in and around the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The department and its partners will expose learners to information about oceans, marine pollution and careers in the marine sector.

World Oceans Day is a reminder of the pivotal role oceans play in regulating the earth’s ecosystems and the threats oceans face.

WORLD OCEANS DAY BEACH CLEANUP AT LA JOLLA SHORES

San Diego Coastkeeper hosts a beach cleanup at La Jolla Shores Beach – Kellogg Park, in La Jolla. This beach is very popular with locals and tourists alike, and is a fun, family friendly place to go tidepooling, surfing, snorkelling, kayaking or just hanging out on the beach. Although La Jolla Shores is one of the cleaner beaches in San Diego, we still find a troubling amount of trash along the beach as well as in the surrounding park. Meet in front of the lifeguard tower in the grassy area.

Driving Directions

From I-5 North: Take La Jolla Parkway exit. Turns into Torrey Pines Rd. Turn right on La Jolla Shores Dr. Turn left onto Calle Frescota. Cross over Camino del Oro and park in the parking lot by the beach.

From I-5 South: Take La Jolla Village Dr. exit. Turn right onto La Jolla Village Dr. Turn left on Torrey Pines Rd. Take a right on La Jolla Shores Dr. Turn left onto Calle Frescota. Cross over Camino del Oro and park in the parking lot by the beach.

Beach Cleanup Information

  • Meet at the location described, and look for the blue Coastkeeper pop-up tent. That’s where you’ll start your morning by signing in and borrowing cleanup supplies.
  • We will have supplies on hand, but by bringing your own reusable gloves, reusable bag/bucket and/or reusable water bottle, we create less waste in order to remove it.
  • Please wear comfortable clothes, closed-toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers (individuals as well as groups) are welcome to participate and must sign this liability waiver. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate.
  • Registration is not required unless a group is larger than 20 people – to register please contact cleanups@sdcoastkeeper.org.
  • As a volunteer, you play an active role in determining the sources of trash on our beaches. During the cleanup, please be prepared to fill out a data card detailing the types of trash that you collected, and make sure to have your trash weighed when you return to the registration table at the end of the cleanup.

World Oceans Day Bermuda Aquarium

In honor of World Ocean Day tomorrow, BAMZ and BZS staff and volunteers did a clean up for conservation. The team divided into two groups. One tackled the area in Flatts directly in front of the aquarium between T dock and I dock. The other went to Dingle's Bay in Harrington Sound where prevailing winds typically drives lots of flotsam. In a space of 2 hours the two groups cleaned both areas and collected some 400lbs of plastic debris as well as a large amount of bottles and a lawn chair. Take a look at the underwater tangled web of fishing line in Flatts - this is what our sea life has to contend with.

We encourage everyone to do their part! When you go to the beach, pick up three pieces of litter when you leave and put them into a proper receptacle.
